Parvati fasted to get Lord Shiva
There is a belief behind celebrating Hartalika Teej that to get Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati was the first to perform a haratalika fast. Hartalika is made up of two words. One is green and the other is Aleka. In this, green means kidnapping and Alika means friend. For this reason, this fast is called hartalika. It has a mythological story. According to this, Parvati’s friends were kidnapped and taken to the forest so that they would not marry Lord Vishnu contrary to their wishes. In the forest, Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva and worshiped the earthen Shivling on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. Lord Shiva was happy with his penance and accepted her as his wife.
